What a great day. Headed to Baltimore for the Help Portrait event again this year. Many familiar face both the staff that was taking the photos and assisting with hair, make-up, processing and printing to the folks that came in for their portraits. I want to point out the gentleman with the surgical cap on. The cap was created from portraits of his family that he had taken last year during the help portrait event.

Veterans Day Washington, DC 11 Nov 2010

I had the pleasure to attend many of the Veterans Day ceremonies in Washington, DC taking place at the memorials to our veterans. The wreath laying at the World Ward II memorial was very touching. Numerous WWII vets were in attendance and a special emphasis was given to the women that served in the second world war.

The Viet Nam and Korean memorials had abundant vets in attendance who were catching up with comrades and more than willing to share a story or two. The Viet Nam Women’s Memorial was truly inspiring with women that served in country telling their story as part of a living history program.

Washington Waterfalls

As a veteran the next best thing to being with family on Veterans Day is to hike to some beautiful waterfalls and partake in the serenity and beauty of nature. That is just what I did today. I happened to be in Tacoma, Washington so I took the opportunity to head over to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest which is close to Mount Rainer National Park to grab some photos of the falls in the area. A nice peaceful mile hike through the old forest and along the Covell Creek brought me to some nice waterfalls. I am a bit confused on which falls I say because the the website http://www.waterfallsnorthwest.com/ shows the major falls pictured below to be the Covell Falls and a sign leading to the falls indcated it was Angel Falls. Either way the hike and falls were breath taking ( yes there was some up hill climbing and boy am I out of shape). Colorado Road Trip

Sunday 8 Nov 2009, What a day for a drive throught eh Colorado Country side. We started out in the morning with a trip to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. The sun had just risen and there was an overcast sky. After hiking through the Garden of the Gods we headed west just to glimpse the mountain enjoy the beautiful day. Driving along highway 24 to 50 and I do not remember the rest we we presented with the majestic beauty of the Rockies. Along the way home we saw a few cars pulled to the side of the road so we joined them to see a small heard of Big Horn Sheep. The canyon we saw them in was named Big Horn Canyon. We flew into Colorado from El Paso, TX today. It was a bright sunny day with unseasonably warm weather. Arriving in Colorado Springs early morning it was a great time to take a journey up Pike Peak "Americas Mountain" and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Good Eat'n in El Paso, TX

Ok so I'm behind on the blog so bear with me. On Monday, 2 Nov 09 we went to eat at Cattleman's Steakhouse at Indian Cliffs Ranch just outside of El Paso, TX. A really nice place that I would highly recommend to anyone that is in the El Paso area. I had this whopper of a steak that weighed in at 2 pounds (before cooking). It was the best steak I have ever had. Here are the before and after photos.

Cross Country

It’s been a little while since I posted anything here on the blog so I thought I would talk about the Cross Country meet this past weekend. Now as a photographer you sometimes have to step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself to try something new. Now some of you might be saying shooting a sporting event is nothing new for me but in truth every sport offers different challenges and perspectives. This was my first cross country meet ever. Now since I did not know how the whole thing works I was lucky enough to find one of my co-workers whose son was running in the event. This was an opportunity to learn about how the course was going to be run and where the best vantage points to capture the action would be. I was able to jump around to 4 or 5 different spots within the course and see the race from different angles. Getting from one location to the next on the course was a matter of moving my feet and walking quickly to try and catch the runners that I knew in the race. I’ll give the runners some credit I walked to the spots and they ran the 5k course and made me work to get the shots I did. Baltimore Ravens Training Camp

I took the opportunity this morning to visit the Baltimore Ravens at training camp. A pleasant morning brought a large crowd to McDaniel College in Westminster, MD to see the Ravens prepare for the upcoming season. The players warmed up and then completed different drills based on position. The quarterbacks received a lot of attention form the crowd as did the defense back field players. The Maginot Line - Hackenberg Fortress

The Hackenberg Fortress is the largest of the fortifications along the Maginot Line. The site (on the outskirts of Veckring France) was chosen due in part to the forested ridge that rises 1,125 feet and the proximity to Germany which is only 8 miles or 13 kilometers from the boarder. The Hackenberg Fortress was the largest of the fortresses along the line and was the proto type for the remaining fortress. The French occupied the fortress from 3 Sept 1939 until the French cease fire on 25 June 1940. The Germans maintained control of the fortress until 17 Nov 1944.

The Maginot Line - Fort Schoenenbourg France

The Maginot Line was an immense fortification between France and Germany. After the First World War, where France suffered horrendous loses in both men and buildings, Andre Maginot designed a fortification system that was in theory going to be an impenetrable fortification between France and Germany.

The photos below show the fortification called Fort Schoenenbourg which is located in the Haguenau region of Alsace, France. The Maginot Line was constructed between 1930 and 1940. Unfortunately we arrived late and were not able to view the interior of the fortification. I was able to tour the inside a few years back and can only say that it was a small city within itself.

Switzerland

Well I thought that Switzerland was beautiful the last time I was there, but now I am convinced it is one step away from heaven. Along the way we stopped at a rest area and where I took these shots. Can you believe that such beauty exists right off a major highway?

We stopped in a little town called Beckenried, Switzerland. Beckenried is right on the crystal clear Lake of Lucerne in the Swiss Alps.

Lake Como, Italy

We departed Vicenza Italy for Germany via Switzerland. Along the way we passed Lake Como, Italy and made a detour to view the town and take in some of its flavor. The photos below do not do justice to the town due to photos being taken in the harsh mid day sun. It was a warm pleasant day with abundant sunshine.

To say that Venice was beautiful is an understatement. To meander through the city is an experience worth the long walks. We passed through some narrow streets that barely two people could pass shoulder to shoulder. Bridges lead over the canals both small and large. It is amazing that a city could grow from the Mediterranean Sea. The many mode of transportation is either walking or via boat. The “bus” system was beautiful wooden boats that ferried people around the city. Products were transported via boats as well.

Vilseck is a town located in the Northeastern portion of the Bavaria region of Germany. The name of the town is derived from the German word “Eck” which means corner and from the Vils river with it’s tight bend where the watch tower is located, hence the name Vilseck.

Ladenburg, Germany

Ladenburg is a quaint little town along the Neckar River which boasts Roman Ruins from the year 2 AD. The center of the town consists of may colorful timber buildings. Many of the walls have stone ornamental figures and shields on them. There was one square down from the Die Kartofiel restaurant (the potato restaurant) that we ate at, had some interesting statues which you can see in the photos below. A nice little town with a lot of atmosphere. It was a shame that it was raining and I could not get more photos.

Trier Germany and American Cemetery in Luxemburg

An exciting day with a trip to Trier Germany and then on to Luxemburg. This posting with have 2 parts with the first being Trier followed with the American cemetery at Luxemburg.

In Trier we went to the Porta Negra and the Dom and Basilica to mention a few places. The right out side the old town we visited the Roman Amphitheatre. Check out the photos.

After a couple hours in Trier we went off to the American Cemetery in Luxemburg to visit the grave of General George S. Patton. Remarkable reverence paid to the men who fought so valiantly in WWII. The photos were not able to capture the grandeur of the cemetery.

In order to fight off the dreaded jet lack we went to the “walking street” in Heidelberg to grab something to eat and walk around a bit. The walk was nice as it got the blood flowing and helped to give us a little burst of energy.

US Military Academy, West Point

I’ve been at West Point this week with my colleagues on a business trip. Walking the campus you get to take in beauty and the majesty of the buildings and have a sense of awe knowing that West Point has played a vital part in American history since the revolutionary war. General George Washington moved his headquarters to West Point in 1779. Over the years many of the greatest military leaders have passed through the halls and campus of West Point. Some notable graduates include: Jefferson Davis class of 1828; Robert E Lee class of 1829; Dwight D. Eisenhower class of 1915; Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin class of 1951. History has yet to be written about the more recent graduates, only time will tell. Attached are a few photos from the campus. Also one is in the HDR (High Dynamic Resolution) format. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the photos.

Well it has been a while since I last blogged. I've been out shooting some local sports from baseball to tennis. Ty plays for the Frederick American Little League and since getting back from Hawaii and Korea I have been taking some shots of his team in action. Unfortunately Sean and his doubles partner did not make it to the states but played extremely well. One of the Tuscarora girls is going to states and I will be there to "capture the moment" for her and her family. Maui 26 April

What a day. We got up and had a 5:20 am flight to the Island of Maui. We were not sure what the plan was but we decided to go whale watching first, hunt for water falls, visit the volcano (yep another one) and then go to the Iao Valley. The photos below are just an example of the great time we had. The whale watching was a 2 hour cruise on a very flat and calm ocean where we saw a Mother and her calf. WOW this was an great experience. Hiked into a water fall and got luck to capture a long exposure since I did not bring the tripod. Learned a lesson, always bring the tripod. Next we drove to the summit of Haleakale Volcano in the Haleakala National Park. It is somewhat difficult to tell the depth of the volcanic crater due to the constant clouds that filled the basin. As they moved out a new cloud formed. Beautiful. Maui is a stunning island that really caught my eye. I will be going back some day.

The best part is that we rode to the airport in a stretch Limo.

Big Island of Hawai'i

It's been a couple days since the last entry due to our travels and the time that we arrived back at the hotels. On Saturday, 25 April we went to the bis island of Hawai'i. We left at 5:52 am and returned at 10:30 pm. You'll see that I had no time to write on the next blog.

The Big Island was nice we went over to the Volcano National Park to see if we could see any active lava flows. Unfortunately, there were no active flows but we did hike throughout the park and really enjoyed the views and the varied landscapes. We were able to look down into the crater of the one of the largest active volcano in the US and walk through a rain forest. Some of the photos below will give you an idea of the landscape and the sights that we saw. I especially, liked the one shot of the lava covering the road. There were tremendous lava beds through out the park that are dated from different times. Some of the older lava beds are seeing a rebirth of life with trees and plant life growing, as noted in the photo of the palm trees in the lava field. At the site of the lava crossing the road there was a very bad smell of sulfur from the activity just a few weeks ago.

Hawaii Day 2

Today is our second day in Hawaii and a full one at that. Do you remember youtr mom telling you not to use that four letter word that ends in "K"...Not that one I'm talking about WORK. Well that seems to get in the weay at times when you want to be out and about taking photos. Here are a couple that I took today. One is a different view of Diamond Head and the others are of what else the beach. I liked the one of the beach in the daylight due to the way that the suns rays were filtered through the clouds. The second beach shot is a peacful sunset with the catamarans coming back in. Beautiful day. Stay tuned over the next few days as I will be visiting the Big Island and Mauai. Should be a lot of fun. April 23rd Again

The title says it all. We are now in Hawaii which means that we got to live April 23rd again. We left Korea around 8:50 pm on the 23 April and arrived in Honolulu on 23 April at 1000 am. Time travel is a good thing but let me tell you we are all beat.

So this one will be a bit short and you will get to see a lot more of the week each day so please check back to see what we were up to.

Once we arrived and were able to check into our rooms we headed out for a short walk to see some of the sights. Now Hawaii is well know for it's beaches and we were not disappointed. Along the beach folks were surfing and playing beach volleyball. Couple of photos of the surfing and the volleyball.

We continued to walk down the path along the beach and I took this shot of Diamond Head. Might have to see about climbing it. As we came back we spotted a couple of Red Crested Cardinals. Now I am sure you are asking how I knew they were Red Crested Cardinals, right...well I looked it up in a book. Not bad for someone who is extremely tired.

Well this is all for the day. I will be adding more tomorrow. Not sure what the plan is after work but it will be fun.

Crazy Car Towing

We were walking around The Itaewon District of Seoul. Right next to us a tow truck backs up and has it's little arm reach out and scoops up the car. The tow truck driover did not even exit his truck to make this happen. This was so funny as you'll hear in the video. Only thing that would have been funnier is if the owner of the car showed up and chased the car down the road. Check it out.

It's been a few days since I updated so I thought I should give a quick run down. Been working a lot and only have a little time in the evenings to go explore. On Tuesday night a few of us went to a Korean barbecue which was a lot of fun. We had no idea how it worked so the waitress gave us the run down and helped cook the food. Korean Barbecue is cooked at the table and eaten like a burrito. Only difference is that instead of a flour or corn tortilla you wrap it in a leaf of lettuce or a sesame leaf. Really good. I've add a couple of pictures from a street vendor, it looks like beef that is being cooked. Maybe tonight I will venture out and give it a try.

Today we went to the Gyeonbokgung Palace in Seoul. The palace was the residence of the Royal Family during the Joseon Dynasty, which ruled from 1392 to 1910. Here are a few pictures of the changing of the guard ceremony. We just caught this ceremony when we walked up to the palace.

Trip to Korea

Wrote this while on the plane heading for Seoul, Korea.

Well we took off from Dulles International Airport and we are in route to Seoul, South Korea. Flight thus far is very good; attendants are very nice and helpful. We just ate I had Bibimbop, Seaweed soup and white sticky rice. It was really good and I can not wait to try the food on the ;
local economy vise airline food. I'll try to put up some photos of the food so you can have a look.

Looking at the in flight map it appears that we will be flying in sunlight the entire trip. I ques sleep is out of the "picture" so to speak. We are traveling at 494 mph at 34,000 feet. The total distance of the trip to Korea is 6,073 miles. Just opened the window shade and we are over the Hudson bay which is still frozen. I'll put a couple of shots of that up.

I've decided to keep this somewhat running in order to have something to do on the flight. Right now it is 1908 east coast time (Fri 17th Apr) and 0828(Saturday in Korea) We just crossed the Arctic Circle above the Northwest Territories approaching the Beaufort Sea and the Yukon. Not much to see out the window, everything is very bright snow. Flight has been smooth so far and hope it stays that way (and it did). Still no sleep.

OK we landed in Seoul International Airport which is actually in Incheon Korea. Drove to the Dragon Hill Lodge where we will be staying and got a nice scenic view of the country side and the city of Seoul. Can't wait to go explore the city and get some incredible photos. Spring

Well it looks like spring is finally here. With the warmer temps it’s time to get out and enjoy the world around us. Last weekend in Washington DC they held the Cherry Blossom Festival, with major grounds where ever you ventured to along the mall. We decided to go see the blossoms for the first time and enjoy the warmth of the day. We walked all along the mall from the Smithsonian to the Viet Nam Memorial Wall. We took in the sites of the tidal basin over looking the Jefferson Memorial and absorbed the fragrances of the cherry blossoms. While at the tidal basin the gulls were soaring in the warm air while those of us on foot managed to get through the crowds. Good time by all.

As the coach of the office soccer team I am happy to announce that we won our first game 7-5. Record now stands at 1-1, but we are on a roll. The first game was miserable with the wind, snow flakes falling and the general lack knowledge of the game. The team only has a few players that have played organized soccer in the past.
